The Board of Directors of the San Diego County Bar Association voted on November 13 to elect Johanna Schiavoni to serve as President Elect of the Association in 2019 and President in 2020. Johanna–currently serving in her third year on the Board and as a Vice President–previously served as Treasurer, as the inaugural Chair of the Public Positions Advisory Group, and as Chair of the Court Funding Action Committee. Johanna will serve as the 14th female president of the Association, which was founded in 1899.

In April 2018, Super Lawyers announced its “Top Attorney” lists in San Diego. Johanna Schiavoni was selected as one of San Diego’s “Top 25” women attorneys, and one of the “Top 50” attorneys overall (one of only 8 women on that list). “Super Lawyers” evaluates attorneys based on their professional expertise, peer evaluations, and independent research. Selection for the “Top Attorney” lists is based on the overall scores individual attorneys receive in the evaluation process.
Johanna is incredibly proud to be included among these groups of talented lawyers, and to continue to provide excellent service to her clients.

After being nominated by San Diego’s Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Johanna Schiavoni was unanimously confirmed by the San Diego City Council to a position on the nine-member board overseeing the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. The Authority is an independent agency that manages the day-to-day operations of the San Diego International Airport and addresses the region’s long-term air transportation needs.
Schiavoni understands the importance of that role in the region, and notes that she is “proud to help guide the stewardship of a critical regional asset and economic engine like San Diego’s International Airport.”

For the fourth year in a row, Johanna Schiavoni has been selected to the San Diego “Super Lawyers” List in the Appellate Litigation category. The honor is bestowed on only the top 5% of attorneys in a practice area, after a rigorous selection process involving merit selection and peer evaluation. The Super Lawyers list will be published in January 2018.

Johanna Schiavoni served as a panelist at the California Women Lawyers conference in San Diego for a discussion about how women can become more involved in local government and opportunities for women in leadership. Johanna spoke about serving an appointee on a City Board, and the importance of women seeking such positions on government Boards and Commissions. She also offered her perspective on how to support women candidates for elected office, even for those not interested in being candidates themselves. Co-panelist City Attorney Mara Elliott spoke about her experience running her successful campaign to serve as San Diego’s first female City Attorney, and the particular importance of cultivating networks ahead of the decision to run. Executive Director of Coro Southern California, Natalie Smarjian, spoke about training programs available candidates interested in serving in elected office. The panel was moderated by Santa Barbara attorney and CWL Board member Danielle DeSmith, who graduated from Emerge California’s candidate training program.

For the third time in as many years, Johanna Schiavoni has been selected for inclusion in the San Diego “Super Lawyers” list in the Appellate Litigation category. This competitive honor, reserved for the top 5% of practitioners in any practice area, is awarded based upon merit selection criteria in addition to review by peer attorneys. The official “Super Lawyers” list will be published in January 2017.

The Board of Directors of the San Diego County Bar Association elected Johanna Schiavoni to serve as its Treasurer in 2017. The role includes overseeing the finances of the association, in addition to serving as an officer of corporations under the association and as a member of the Board’s Executive Committee. Johanna is serving a three-year term (2016-2018) as a Director on the Association’s board. The Treasurer position is a one-year term from January 1 – December 31, 2017.

Johanna Schiavoni has been awarded the distinction of Certified Appellate Specialist by the State Bar of California, Board of Legal Specialization. There are fewer than 300 Certified Appellate Specialist attorneys in California (out of approximately 187,000 active attorneys in California). Achieving this certification requires passing a rigorous written examination, in addition to meeting extensive experiential requirements, including participating in specialized appellate educational courses, preparing numerous written appellate briefs and conducting at least seven oral arguments, and ultimately being selected through peer review. Johanna Schiavoni was elected in November to serve as an At-Large Director of the San Diego County Bar Association. She was sworn in to that position on December 4, 2015, at the SDCBA’s annual Stepping Up to the Bar event. Johanna will serve a 3-year term as a Director.
The SDCBA is the region’s oldest and largest bar association. The SDCBA’s mission is to be San Diego County’s representative of the legal profession, serving the public and the profession by enhancing the legal system and promoting justice, professional excellence and respect for the law.
Johanna also has been selected to serve as the SCDBA’s Chair of the Court Funding Action Committee, which advocates for restoration of funding to the state court system.

As an appellate litigator with both a civil and criminal practice, Johanna has more than twelve years of public and private sector experience across a broad spectrum of areas. She has been deeply involved in the SDCBA and legal community, working on issues like court funding, access to justice, advancing diversity and inclusion, and mentoring younger attorneys. She has demonstrated her commitment and leadership abilities within SDCBA committees, as a recent past president of Lawyers Club of San Diego, and as the 2014 recipient of the SDCBA’s Award for Outstanding Community Service.
